News (2011):

• Officers for 2012 - Elections for officers were held at the Dec. 14 meeting. The officers for 2012 are:

• The club held its annual Turkey Shoot on November 19th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Scores and photos from the shoot are posted in the photo album.

• The club held an NRA Basic Personal Protection Inside the Home Course on November 12th & 13th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Photos from the class are posted in the photo album.

• The club held an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course on October 8th & 9th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Photos from the class are posted in the photo album.

• The club held an NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home Course on May 13-15 at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Seven students took the class. This was our first offering of "Outside the Home" after the instructors were trained. We taught both the basic and advanced portions in one long weekend. A class photo is in the photo album.

• The club secretary departs . . .

  To all my Friends in BEEGC,

  With aching heart I have given notice to BCA and will be returning to Michigan.

  The combined effect of being a "geographical bachelor" and the failure of manager to ensure BCA maintaining trained qualified personnel, have taken their toll.

  I appreciate all that I have encountered during the meetings and at the various shoots, it wasn't about the scores but the camaraderie that flowed readily to all and from all.

• The NRA Basic Rifle Course scheduled for May 15-16, 2010 was cancelled due to low enrollment.

• The club held an NRA Basic Personal Protection Inside the Home Course on April 17th & 18th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Twelve students took the class.

• The Club held an Action Shoot on March 27 at Sam's Gun Shop & Range in Everett. Scores are posted in the photo album. After the shoot, we adjourned for pizza.

• The club held its 2nd Spring NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course on March 13th & 14th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range.

• The club held an NRA Basic Basic Personal Protection (Inside the Home) Course on April 18th & 19th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range. Photos from the class are posted in the photo album.

• The club held an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course on March 14th & 15th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range.

• The club held an NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home Course on March 6, 8 & 8 at Sam's Gun Shop & Range in Everett. This was a class for training staff to prepare them to take the instructor class which, in turn, will allow the Club to teach this class. The class covered a LOT of material in 2½ days.

• Roger Moore conducted a Utah/Oregon Concealed Carry Permit Class on Feb. 28-Mar. 1. See below for a description of the class.

• The club held an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course on February 7th & 8th at Sam's Gun Shop & Range.

Gun Safes and Sales Tax:

• From the webmaster:

  In the state of Washington, gun safes are exempt from retail sales tax. The relevant section of state law is RCW 82.08.832 which reads:

  Exemptions — Sales of gun safes.

  (1) The tax levied by RCW 82.08.020 does not apply to sales of gun safes.

  (2) As used in this section and RCW 82.12.832, "gun safe" means an enclosure specifically designed or modified for the purpose of storing a firearm and equipped with a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device which, when locked, prevents the unauthorized use of the firearm.

  RCW 82.08.020 is, of course, the section of the law establishing the retail sales tax.

  The back story: If you missed the meetings where this was discussed, here is how it happened. I found a small, fairly inexpensive gun safe advertised on walmart.com and decided to order it. I stopped when I found their shopping cart was, incorrectly, going to charge me sales tax. After a number of emails back and forth with walmart.com staff, I reached someone who researched the law and found I was correct. She asked me to order and, if charged sales tax, to contact her and she would get it corrected. I did; I was charged sales tax; and she got my order corrected. (To be fair, this occurred when Arkansas was having massive power outages due to an ice storm, so they had other distractions which slowed down everything.)

  Lesson learned: Cite the code section in your first communication with someone who wants to charge sales tax on a gun safe. It will save a complete round trip via email since you probably will have to cite it eventually.

A great CCW opportunity!

You can register for Utah/Oregon Concealed Carry Permit Classes through this website. Completion of the class is a requirement to obtain a non-resident CCW permit in Utah or Oregon. The Utah permit is recognized in 27 states. The class is one day in length.  For more information, or to pre-register for a class contact Roger Moore at: rmoore@gunsmartfirearmtraining.com. Be sure to include your name, phone number and e-mail address, and put "EGC - UT/OR CCW" in the subject line. When we have enough students to hold a class, one will be scheduled in this area. They are typically held at Sam's Gun Shop & Range in Everett, WA.
